A witness hogtied a suspected drunken driver in New Mexico when he pulled over after almost causing several head-on crashes, according to news reports.
Farmington police said Justin Canuto, 22, was driving southbound in the northbound lanes of U.S. 550 about 9:30 Sunday night, The Daily Times reports (via the Associated Press). Witnesses called 911 after watching him narrowly avoid several crashes, and followed him into a convenience store parking lot when he pulled over, a sheriff's official said.
When confronted, Canuto became belligerent and tried to flee, but an unidentified 26-year-old man tackled and hogtied him until deputies could arrive. Canuto was charged with drunken driving. The roper will not be charged.
A stretch of the rural, four-lane highway, which runs through the Navajo Nation in the northwestern part of the state, has been particularly deadly of late. Six people have died in crashes in six weeks between Bloomfield and Cuba.
Canuto's arrest came hours after Navajo, state and county officials met to discuss the drunken-driving problem.
