Family buries homicide victim as police search for suspect

The family of a 32-year-old man found slain outside a Charlotte convenience store buried him this weekend as police continue to search for a suspect in the killing.

Dozens of people gathered to remember Yama Monteith Fluker on Friday night at Southside Park, only blocks away from where his body was discovered southwest of Charlotte's uptown. Family and friends at the candlelight vigil, hosted by Charlotte group Mothers of Murdered Offspring, described Fluker as a good man and father who always had a smile on his face. His funeral was held Saturday.

On Jan. 19, someone called police to report that there was an unresponsive man inside a car parked in front of Al's Mini Mart at the intersection of Toomey and West Tremont avenues, according to Charlotte-Mecklenburg police.

Police later said they were investigating Fluker's death as a homicide and released surveillance footage that showed a person they said is a suspect in the case. The footage, apparently taken just outside the store, shows a person walking toward the camera wearing light colored pants, dark shoes, a dark shirt and a hooded jacket covering his head. About two minutes later, the video shows the person sprinting in the opposite direction.

As of Saturday afternoon, police had not made an arrest in Fluker's killing.

Anyone with information about the case is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 704-334-1600.
