Wreck kills 1, snarls southbound I-85

A wreck involving two trucks Monday morning left one person dead and snarled traffic on southbound Interstate 85 near the Mecklenburg-Gaston county line, authorities say.

Traffic also was snarled on Wilkinson Boulevard, which many motorists used as an alternate route.

The wreck was reported about 5:15 a.m. on I-85 near the Sam Wilson Road exit, at the truck weigh station. According to reports from the scene, a tractor-trailer had broken down along the right side of the road. A short time later, according to reports, a rental truck slammed into the rear of the tractor-trailer.

The driver of the rental truck was killed. The driver of the broken-down truck was taken by Medic to Carolinas Medical Center.

Charlotte fire Capt. Rob Brisley confirmed that one person died in the wreck. He said firefighters spent 50 minutes at the scene, after a motorist was reported to have been trapped.

All southbound lanes were closed for more than two hours after the wreck, but authorities were able to open two of the four lanes -- on the left side -- about 7:30 a.m.

At 8 a.m., traffic remained badly snarled on southbound I-85, with backups beyond Interstate 485.

The N.C. Highway Patrol had been detouring traffic off I-85 onto I-485 and Wilkinson Boulevard, but Wilkinson Boulevard was badly clogged at 8 a.m.

Regardless of the route being taken by southbound motorists, delays are likely until at least 8:30 a.m.
