Westbound I-40 reopens at state line

RALEIGH North Carolina's Department of Transportation reopened westbound Interstate 40 near the Tennessee state line before dawn today after crews cleared the highway from two rock slides.

Only one westbound lane is open on the Tennessee side.

The slide in eastern Tennessee closed the interstate Jan. 31, forcing westbound traffic in North Carolina to take a detour 20 miles from the state line.

Friday, rock came down in North Carolina in the closed section, seven miles from the Tennessee state line.

DOT said late Saturday that crews would be finished cleaning up about 600 tons of rock by 6 a.m. today. Part of the job was taking an additional 150 tons of loose rock off the mountain above the road so stones would not fall.

The Tennessee Department of Transportation said it has been able to clear enough stone from its slide at mile marker 451 to open one of I-40's two westbound lanes.
