Authorities say they do not believe an intentionally-set fire Wednesday evening in Mint Hill will cause any environmental dangers to the area.
The fire was reported at a vacant building in the 15100 block of Albemarle Road, which is not far from the Mecklenburg-Cabarrus county line. That building was the site of an Environmental Protection Agency Superfund cleanup in 2003.
Mint Hill fire department officials said witnesses reported seeing six people running from the building. Four people were questioned, according to Charlotte-Mecklenburg police. According to several broadcast reports Thursday morning, the four were teens.
The building was the site of Ram Leather Care Dry Cleaners, which closed in 1993 after the discovery that potentially hazardous chemicals were found in nearby wells.
In 2003, according to the EPA, the site was cleaned with Superfund money. The EPA says groundwater supplies are used to provide water for residents and businesses in the area.
No arrests have been announced in the case.
Mint Hill, Midland, Idlewild and Robinson volunteer firefighters responded to the blaze. The Mecklenburg County Fire Marshal and CMPD arson detectives are investigating.
No injuries were reported.
