Cabarrus County to send out new tax values

Cabarrus County is expected to begin mailing out new property tax values later this month.

Meanwhile, county leaders must now decide next year's tax rate.

Cabarrus last reset property values in 2008, before many areas experienced major declines in home prices and sales.

The size of the county's overall tax base is expected to shrink under the new revaluation, according to a report given to Cabarrus commissioners at their recent retreat.

The expected decline would cause the county to raise about $17.6 million less in property taxes under the current tax rate. (Concord) Independent-Tribune

Rock Hill man charged in stabbing, armed robbery

A Rock Hill man was charged with stabbing another man after asking him for a ride Friday.

Travis Scott Hunt, 20, was charged with two counts of kidnapping, two counts of armed robbery and one count of attempted murder, according to police documents. He was arrested Friday and was in Moss Justice Center awaiting a bond hearing.

The charges stem from an incident early Friday morning. A 20-year-old man said he and a friend were at the Money at 115 S. Cherry Road waiting for another friend when a man approached them and offered $5 if they would give him a ride, according to a Rock Hill police report. After they pulled into the parking lot of Oakwood Acres Park on Montclair Avenue, the man pulled out a knife and said he also had a gun.

All three got out of the car while the man with the knife, identified as Hunt, tried to make them "tie up to" the other, the report states. One of the victims struggled with him and was stabbed several times.

The victim was taken to Piedmont Medical Center with injuries that weren't life-threatening. (Rock Hill) Herald

Interstate 40 west reopens as fallen rocks removed

North Carolina motorists have free sailing on Interstate 40 in the mountains again after crews cleared away rock slides that blocked the highway.

All lanes of I-40 westbound in Haywood County reopened Sunday after about 600 tons of rock fell onto the road this week.

An earlier slide of mud and rocks about eight miles away in Tennessee continues to keep one of two westbound lanes of the highway closed for repair.

A massive rock slide on I-40 in North Carolina in October 2009 closed the interstate for six months. Associated Press
